The Klein Project #2

It may have been eight months since the first Newsletter, but the Klein Project has been steadily progressing. In particular, there is now a live “wiki” website at <kleinproject.org>. More information on all topics below can be found there.

First of all, many thanks to the many people (over 100) who have emailed and asked to be put on the mailing list. The Design Group appreciates the interest. We have been working on how to manage a very large number of contributions—read on.

The first Klein Conference was held in Madeira in October, 2009. About 100 people, mostly from Portugal and Brazil, attended and held robust discussions about the project. Many presentations argued for the importance of particular topics, or for topics in particular styles. Proceedings are still in production.

The second Klein Conference will be held in Castro-Urdales, Spain in the first week of June.

The Design Group has just held its second meeting (in Auckland, this April). The main work was the development of the idea of “Klein Articles”. These short articles are now solicited from anyone wishing to make a contribution. They will be reviewed by the Design Group to ensure they meet the criteria, and undergo a review process. Articles can be submitted directly onto the website “Klein Articles”-->“Submitted Articles”. They may also be sent directly to any member of the group. Please read the criteria as you prepare your article.

At its second meeting the Design Group did not discuss further the structure of the book. This will be the subject of debate in Spain in June, and will not be finalised until the end of the year. Hence comments and ideas for the structure of the book are welcomed. Please email [mailto://b.barton@auckland.ac.nz Bill Barton] or any other member of the group.

Other types of contributions are also welcomed. The website has a category for “Recommended Reading” and for “Related Links”. You are welcome to add items to these lists. Please include a sentence or two about the item.

Volunteers are needed to translate the newsletter into any other language.

The Design Group would like to hear from anyone, or any organisation, that is interested in hosting a Klein conference or workshop.

 In 2008 IMU and ICMI commissioned a project to revisit the intent of Felix Klein when he wrote Elementary Mathematics from an Advanced Standpoint. That is, to produce a book for secondary teachers that communicates the breadth and vitality of the research discipline of mathematics and connects it to the senior secondary school curriculum.
 The international Design Team for the project met recently. The team confirmed the production of a 300-page book written to inspire teachers to present to their students a more complete picture of the growing and interconnected field represented by the mathematical sciences in today’s world. We expect this will be backed up by web, print, and DVD resources. The project is expected to take about four years.
 The book will be neither comprehensive, nor definitive of the field. Whatever chapter structure is chosen the text will emphasise links between branches of the field and generic themes (such as the impact of computing). Insights from mathematics education will not be addressed specifically but will be implicit in many places.
 The Design Team seeks input from all those working in the mathematical sciences, researchers and educators alike. We welcome written communications, but will also be holding several “Klein conferences” around the world where feedback on draft ideas and material can be given, and original contributions offered. The actual writing will be done by invited authors of proven experience in expert and inspiring authorship.
